Expert Q&A:

Common Stone Care Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Maintaining the beauty and longevity of stone surfaces in your home can be a challenge. We spoke with Denise Daniels, a renowned stone care expert with over 10 years of experience, to shed light on the most common mistakes people make when caring for their stone surfaces and how to avoid them. Denise also discusses how MB Stone Care® products can help correct these mistakes and ensure your stone surfaces remain pristine.

What are the most common mistakes people make when caring for their stone surfaces?

 Denise Daniels:

One of the most frequent mistakes is using the wrong cleaning products. Many household cleaners contain acids or harsh chemicals that can damage natural stone surfaces. For instance, vinegar and bleach, although popular for general cleaning, can etch and dull the finish of stone surfaces, sometimes immediately. Another common mistake is neglecting to seal stone surfaces properly. Sealants provide a protective barrier against stains and moisture, and without regular resealing, stones become more susceptible to damage. However, don’t get sold into the old tale of “you have to seal every year“. Sealing isn’t always required. We have a great video on how to test if it’s time to seal.

How can homeowners avoid using the wrong cleaning products on their stone surfaces?

 Denise Daniels:

The key is to use pH-neutral cleaners specifically designed for natural stone. MB Stone Care® offers a range of products tailored for different types of stone surfaces. For everyday cleaning, the MB-5 Stone & More Multi Surface Cleaner is an excellent choice. It’s pH-neutral, safe for all types of natural stone, and effective at removing everyday dirt and grime without harming the surface. But we have a wide array of cleaning products for any of your stone care needs.

What about the issue of sealing stone surfaces? How often should this be done, and how can MB Stone Care® products help?

 Denise Daniels:

The frequency of sealing depends on the type of stone and its usage. Generally, high-traffic areas or frequently used countertops will likely need to be sealed more often. To check if your stone needs sealing, perform a simple water test: put about a quarter sized amount of water on the surface, and if it absorbs quickly or darkens the stone, it’s time to reseal. If it stays puddled on the surface then sealing is not required.

MB Stone Care® provides excellent sealing solutions. The MB-24 Barrier is a top-notch impregnating sealer that penetrates the stone to provide long-lasting protection without altering its natural appearance. Regular use of such high-quality sealants can prevent stains and make everyday cleaning easier.

Are there specific care tips for different types of stone surfaces, like marble or granite?

Denise Daniels:

Absolutely. Each type of stone has its own care requirements. For instance, marble is softer, acid sensitive and more prone to scratching and etching, so it needs extra care. Avoid using abrasive and acidic cleaners or pads. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or pads. Instead, use a pH-neutral cleaner like Easy Oxy and a soft cloth. Granite, on the other hand, is more durable but still benefits from regular sealing and proper cleaning.

MB Stone Care® has specific products for different stones. For example, the MB-11 Touch-Up is perfect for removing small areas of etching on lighter color calcite based stones like marble, restoring their shine without professional help. (We do recommend you message us when you have stone damage first, to make sure you get the correct product.)

What should homeowners do if they notice stains or etching on their stone surfaces?

 Denise Daniels:

The first step is to identify the type of stain. Organic stains, like coffee, oil, or wine, can often be removed with a poultice like Stain Reaper. For more stubborn stains or etching, professional products designed for stone restoration should be used.

Hardscape BSC is excellent for tackling mold and mildew stains on marble, granite, and other natural stones. For etching, always contact us and send a few pictures before you decide to purchase anything. Etches can be different levels and we have different products to help with different levels of etching.

Any final tips for maintaining stone surfaces?

 Denise Daniels:

Consistency is key. Regular cleaning with appropriate products, timely sealing, and addressing issues like stains and etching promptly can keep your stone surfaces looking beautiful for years. Using high-quality products like those from MB Stone Care® ensures that you are providing the best care for your stone surfaces, preserving their natural beauty and integrity.
